'Bonsai' is the method of cultivating an artificially dwarfed potted plant or small tree. Growing minature trees in small pots started in China. It was mainly connected with religious followings of Taoism, later Buddism, and one teaching in particular: Zen Buddism. As the faith spread, so did the small trees.
